the curriculimum didn’t emphasize the technical skills but the business side therefore, I don’t know any programming language. I only have general knowledge on visual basic, windows server 2003 administrator and SQL (only 1 class of each) and I am bilingual in Spanish/English. Someone can give me some ideas? I have heard of Business Analyst but what else?

Sounds like a great BS degree if you can do well in interviews. The degree’s title is awesome.

  • Work Scoop:

A bachelor’s in BIS and your background will allow you to get the following jobs:

    1. Systems Analyst

    2. Business Analyst

    3. Database Developer

    4. Data Modeler (using UML)

    5. Project Manager (after a couple years experience)

    6. IT Consultant

    7. IT Salesperson (If you can get your CCNA, Cisco Systems would hire you).

    8. Configuration Management.

    9. IT Security (especially if you can get your CISSP).

I have a BS in Bus. Admin with a major in Computer Info Systems. My strategy has been to try different tech areas and work my way in. I pulled cable in college, moved into networking, next I’d like to get into system/server administration, applications/DBA, then management. I see the jobs I’m taking now as “clinical rotations”.

The Info Sys degree is designed for information systems managers. You could end up as an IT manager/director/etc. Companies are looking for experience and certs. For the real world stuff, you aren’t going to learn a lot of stuff in college anyway.

Look for a help desk/tech support/sys admin type position. Stay in tech long enough to get experience and move up. Small companies have people who spend a lot of their time managing vendor support. Large companies will give you more in-depth technical experience. Plan for management, and use any tech positions you get for the first few years as stepping stones and learning experiences.

The great things about these degrees is that you can play it up as business or tech depending on what you need.

If I haven’t made it clear. In IT… GET CERTS! The degree is just a door opener. For senior positions, certifications allow you to step through that door.
