I need to turn Windows 2000 into a server for a network project, but have no Windows server. Is there anything I can do or download (free) to convert it or use a portion as a server?

    Turn on IIS

Sure. You can install a 3rd party server application. A really good one is Abyss. Located here: http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/

I use it on my win 2000 machine as a testing box / development server.

If you want it make a web server, Install Apache (http://www.apache.org) one of the best web servers. You can also install PHP ( www.php.net) and MySQL (www.mysql.com). With this it will become a full fledged web server with database and scripting language. You can also install other scripting languages like perl etc.. This is the freeware option.

If you want to run ASP and .NET based applications you have to install IIS.

If you mean transform it into a server OS, no. If you mean have it host services, sure, people do it all the time. Provided anything you install is supported on the Pro OS. What services are you trying to host?

    Yes.
