This series of three videos shows how to install Ubuntu Linux Server in vmware Server, a free application for Windows (XP or Vista) that will allow you to run a full Linux operating system in a window on your desktop. These techniques are demonstrated on Windows but also generally apply to the vmware Fusion for the Mac. Why do it? To experiment, to learn, and for instructional purposes. The video is divided into three sections due to length limitations; view all for the complete instructions. Ubuntu Linux Server version 8.04 is a free download at www.ubuntu.com Total running time is about 27 minutes. To install Ubuntu Desktop, see the companion series Install Ubuntu Desktop in vmware Server.
I no longer recommend Virtual PC for a linux virtual machine solution. VMWare and Virtualbox are much better alternatives with better native support for linux.
Do you think ubuntu ver 8.x would run well on virtual pc?
Do you think that the new version 8.X of ubuntu will work as nicely as 6.x on virtual PC?
You can install a virtual machine on other than your primary hard drive, so that’s not the problem. I would suggest googling ubuntu “select and install hardware” and seeing if any of the suggestions help. You may need to post into one of the ubuntu or vmware forums to troubleshoot this.

That’s outside the scope of my tutorials. Google ubuntu server raid and you’ll find resources that will address how to do this.
Will the server version of Ubuntu allow me to do a SoftRaid setup?
It’s not really necessary. For GUI-based machines like Windows XP or Vista, it provides some video and mouse improvements, but for server, you won’t see much difference.
hey mate, when im using VMware it says in the bar below: You do not have VMware Tools installed.
could you please let me know if i need “VMware Tools” and where to find the install.
Thankyou very much.
