This series of three videos shows how to install Ubuntu Linux Server in vmware Server, a free application for Windows (XP or Vista) that will allow you to run a full Linux operating system in a window on your desktop. These techniques are demonstrated on Windows but also generally apply to the vmware Fusion for the Mac. Why do it? To experiment, to learn, and for instructional purposes. The video is divided into three sections due to length limitations; view all for the complete instructions. Ubuntu Linux Server version 8.04 is a free download at www.ubuntu.com Total running time is about 27 minutes. To install Ubuntu Desktop, see the companion series Install Ubuntu Desktop in vmware Server.
The VMWare Server’s installer have 507mb! And my computer almost crashed when i tried to install it (VMWare)
You need broadband. I believe the full ISO is around 500-600 mb
the installer is so BIG OMG! 130MB?!
It’s one of the individual VM network settings.
how would i run in bridge mode?
You have to run the virtual machines in bridged mode if you want other machines to see them.
hi i have vmware workstation with ubuntu server with kubuntu desktop. I have a problem with webmin. I can only access it thru one computer only the vmware pc and the laptop running vmware. how would i access webmin thru my other pc’s? vmware has its own ip address and my pc’s cant see em. HELP
well mine is working well, for the times i use it. had a bit of colour problems but i fixed that
No it doesn’t. The only OS on which Virtual PC can be installed is Windows. There is no host program for Linux, Mac and other Unix types. Installed on a Windows Host, Virtual PC can support Linux/Unix guests. But not Mac guests (at least not legally and easily), because Apple does not make an installable distribution of OSX for anything other than Apple.
yes it does
No, but it should look pretty much like this since there are no significant mouse or keyboard issues. There are problems with processors such as the pentium m that don’t really work well with servers, as discussed in this video. The fix is the same on either vpc or vmware.
Hi Bruce,
Do you have a video on “Install Ubuntu Server in Virtual PC 2007″
Thank you

Phuc Le
Virtual Pc 2007 does not support Linux,Mac, Other Unix Types
Download Vmware!!!
Without more information, there is no way to tell. However if the ISO file won’t boot in Virtual PC, there is a pretty good chance it is corrupted. Check the Ubuntu website for instructions on how to do an MD5 check see if the copy you have is intact and uncorrupted.
I am trying in Virtual PC 2007, but it gets suck before instalation commences, why?
