I used a proxy server to visit some sites that my company either blocks or would not be happy about. However, when I went into my History in Internet Explorer, the sites I visited were visible! I clicked on the proxy server name in the history list and it then revealed the sites in a drop down sub menu. Does that mean they can tell which sites I visited or is this information only local to my machine? I thought proxies were supposed to hide that info? Can company’s still know where you visit even if you use a proxy? I heard that any monitoring firewall still sees where you are going and that it still has all the data unencrypted. Is that true?
Yeah i am sure they can see. To be sure erase all internet history but i am sure by now they already know.
No, proxies don’t clean up your computer for you. Sorry.
As far as the proxy, is the connection to the proxy encrypted?
If not, then all your company has to do is look at the data stream to and from the proxy to know that you’re surfing and should be terminated.
If it is encrypted, then all you have to worry about is any kind of keylogging or screen scraping software that they might have installed on their computer.
Why would you risk your job just to get your jollies? Grow up.
they know now in the schools when they are used so probably. You also take a chance of infecting your company’s comp’s and then you gonna be unemployed so why take the chance???
yes they can tell what you are doing all the time proxy or not it is stored in the server
The problem is not the proxy server name, the problem is a proxy server
If you’re that concerned, don’t go to those sites.
But yes, they’ll be able to see all of the history.
They can do this via log_web_activity, which is a neat addon on a router in PPP that logs your activity, every time the router is reset, it starts fresh.
They can check if they have remote access to your computer, via rdp, vnc, etc. They can also check if your under the same IP/routerip/etc.
They can do an ARP attack if your connected via lan, as well as other employees at your company.
Check in /program files, if you see any unusual program, most companies and schools use vision, so you should check that.
if you find a keylogger, try to cover your tracks and del all remaining data.
EDIT; thanks for the thumbs down even though mine explained everything, arp attacks are used to find data-streams, if your on lan they can see only saved passwords and they can also packet sniff.
log_web_activity is a file in busybox that is used to look at recent websites
i could go on but you guys are stupid so its not worth it.
You are not hidden using a proxy. They all leak ip addresses and even a half wit system admin can nail you if he wants to.
What needs to be considered is that in using a proxy to unblock school and work networks you are breaking numerous laws. Hacking a government (most schools are government run) security system is not legal. At work, you are probably also breaking laws about hacking as well as violating your employment agreement. Getting fired or suspended from school is a definite possibility at the least.
Even if you do get a proxy to work for a bit what do you get? A lot of these are hacker pots designed to either steal your information or plant bots on your computer that they can use. They use them to hide their identity by working through your computer and its internet connection. The recent Facebook and Twitter DDOS attacks that took down their entire networks is a classic example of what people using proxies and getting infected enables.
Even if it’s not a hacker pot it’s probably loaded with advertisements as that’s how the owner is making money. In either case the owner has no incentive to provide fast response or high bandwidth. The owner of the proxy is using you and delivering very little back to you. In fact, there is a good chance they are data mining you so they can sell your information to advertisers who want to target their ads. In most cases advanced web site features won’t work and only basic access will be available anyway.
At the end of the day you’re playing with fire, especially if you download a bot that ends up stealing company information and costing them money. Not to mention your job.

Yes, it does.
There are numerous ways to nail you . Some of them were mentioned – monitoring router/firewall, etc.
Also there are software (for example WorkTime – www.nestersoft.com/worktime) which might be run on your computer and it monitors your browser, regardless if you are using proxy, or encryption, etc.
Also is can monitor your software usage in general – e.g. if your job is to write a documents (in Microsoft Word), but you are spending half of the day in the Internet Explorer – you might be in trouble even if they do not get deeper if it really was “facebook.com” or more legit “merriam-webster.com”…
